Ocean storytime ideas are washing ashore in our last episode of Season 1. Also featuring book buzz titles that are making waves, and information about a fantastic book giveaway that is on the horizon (*This giveaway is now closed). Dive in to find out more!

You can listen to this episode on iTunes, StitcherSoundCloud – or listen to it below! This page also has the rhymes, songs, links, and books we discussed. Party!

Storytime Selections:

Beach Day:

Sing this action song to the tune of “Camptown Races.” Swim, surf, and build a sandcastle. Doo dah!

The Sharks in the Sea:

This song is to the tune of “The Wheels on the Bus,” and features ocean creatures, plus kids jumping in the waves.

Five Little Fishies:

We do this rhyme as a counting flannel. The kids love to participate by repeating the line, “You can’t catch me!” You can also use a shark puppet to snatch the fish right off the flannelboard.

Three Seashells:

This is another counting down rhyme that’s perfect for the flannelboard. This version is lots of fun for toddlers, plus you can expand it to five seashells for the preschoolers.

Baby Shark:

Create a whole family of sharks with this energetic action song. Then swim away as fast as you can! Learn the movements from Jbrary.

The Deep Blue Sea:

Hop aboard the glass bottom boat! These lyrics are the chorus of the song “The Glass Bottom Boat” by Doris Day, from the 1966 movie with the same name. Sing the song and then put an ocean creature on the flannelboard. You can sing this multiple times and put various fish and ocean animals on the board for the kids to identify.

Book Buzz:

A Lullaby of Summer Things is a gentle and lyrical pick for storytime. Readers will join a little girl and her siblings as they wind down from a perfect day–hanging up towels, eating dinner, and getting ready for bed–each activity sparking a memory of their day–playing catch with the dog, chasing waves, and looking at sailboats along the shore. The author, Natalie Ziarnik, is a children’s librarian!

Crash, Splash, or Moo! is an upcoming new book from Bob Shea! This high energy story will be so fun to read in storytime because it’s funny AND interactive. Mr. McMonkey is your host, and your contestants are America’s favorite stunt clam, Action Clam…and a cow! These unlikely daredevils face off in a zany sequence of challenges–and readers get to guess the outcome of all the wacky stunts. The winner gets a Golden Banana! Look for it September 18.

Thank you for joining us this season! We’ll be back October 1st with a big Halloween episode!
