Episode 7: School Library Journal Day of Dialog

June 13, 2018

Storytime Out Loud takes Manhattan! In this episode we get into an empire state of mind and recap the School Library Journal Day of Dialog in NYC. While in the Big Apple we meet librarians, authors, illustrators, and publishers, learn about new and upcoming kidlit, listen to panel discussions, and explore the concrete jungle.

You can listen to this episode on iTunes or SoundCloud Рor listen to it below! This page also has the books we discussed. Party!

We started our NYC adventure at (where else?) the New York Public Library!

Their current exhibit is titled You Say You Want a Revolution: Remembering the 60s, which includes lots of amazing information, photographs, and artifacts all about the counterculture of the 1960s.

From there we strolled over to Bryant Park and had lunch on the rooftop terrace of the Bryant Park Grill. Beautiful atmosphere and scenery, and delicious food and drinks, what more could you want?

The rest of the afternoon was spent at the Conjuring Arts Research Center, which we’ll cover in our next episode!

The next day was devoted entirely to SLJ’s Day of Dialog! We raced over to the NYU Kimmel Center, grabbed some muffins, checked out the exhibit room, dropped our bags in the bag room, and got settled in the auditorium.

Juan Felipe Herrera started us off as the keynote speaker. He shared lots of old family photographs, and talked about his creative process.

Some of the panel discussions:

Betwixt and Between: Middle Graders Coming into Their Own with Tami Charles, Marie Miranda Cruz, Kekla Magoon, Torrey Maldonado, and Gary Schmidt.

Graphic Journeys with Eoin Colfer, John Hendrix, Jarrett Krosoczka, Ngozi Ukazu, and Sara Varon.

Love, Loss, and Belonging: Picture Books Explore the Social and Emotional Landscape of Childhood with Eric Fan, Terry Fan, Ekua Holmes, Matt James, Susan L. Roth, and Sergio Ruzzier.

Our view during lunch!

Our luncheon speaker was the inspiring Angie Thomas!

The exhibit room was jam-packed with amazing new books!

So much newness! Some of our favorites from the day:
